He is an architect with William McDonough + Partners, an advisor to global leaders through McDonough Innovation, and consultant through MBDC, the creators of the framework for Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products. Mr. McDonough is also active with the World Economic Forum and served as the inaugural chair of the World Economic Forum’s Meta-Council on the Circular Economy. He has written extensively on design as the first signal of human intent having co-authored Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (2002) and its follow up, The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance (2013). He has held academic positions at the University of Virginia, Cornell University, and currently at Stanford University.
